What is the best apple to use in apple pie?

I've never made an apple pie before but I'd like to for Thanksgiving. I found a recipe that doesn't look difficult but it just says to core and thinly slice six apples. Which apples do I use? Gala? Granny Smith? Is there a combination? Thank you in advance for you help.

  1. I always use granny smith and the pie turns out AWESOME!! ========
  2. use red delicious they are sweet but not too sweet
  3. Granny Smith they hold up better and balance out the sweetness
  4. Jonathan apples are the best :D
  5. Granny smith is the best apple to use.
  6. use red apples (the reddest) but around the corners use a slight touch of green apple (because they are sour) to make the flavors interesting and amazing
  7. Ohh um I know this kind of apple it's a little bit smaller than most apples but It starts with a "G" and it's not granny smith. But they're very crisp and very sweet.
  8. Gala apples are eating apples. To use these in cooking you will find they will go very watery, but they are lovely and crisp to eat. Granny Smith are cooking apples and hold together better in a recipe that calls for apples to be cooked. They are bred for cooking but are tart enough to eat too. Hope this is of assistance to you ??
  9. I use red delicious and granny smith both. This gives the tart and sweet that my family likes.
  10. granny smith is for baking so sweet its perfect
  11. When I make apple pie, I use a combination of Jonathon and Granny Smith. The Jonathon apples are a little softer and melt down more taht the tart Granny Smith. I also use a little bit of applesauce in my pies. Sometimes applt pie gets kind-of watery and using the applesauce solves this problem. Also gives you a bit of apple in each forkful of pie.
