  4. Yes, if you use 'eating' apples instead of 'cooking' apples as they are much sweeter! If you've forgotten to put the sugar in a pie you've already made (been there, done that!) sprinkle sugar on the appley bit when you serve it up. Or make your custard with a bit more sugar!
  5. Up to you.Won,t be as sweet, more appley, but if you have to limit sugar intake but still like apple pie, fine. You could always eat it with cream or ice cream if the apples are a bit sharp to the taste.. Alternatively use an artificial sweetener of you choice.Apart from sweetening sugar makes the juice in the pie thicker.
  6. You can but it will taste bitter and wont be half as nice as with lots of sugar.
  7. One of the functions of the sugar is to bring the juices ot of the apple so it doesn't dry out during baking. If you're concerned about it healthwise then use a low trans fat or cut back on the sugar in the pastry. If you cut back on the fat in the pastry its more likely to burn when it cooks also its likely to dry out quicker and so wont keep for as long. If you're concerned about it's flavour (what with changing the fat and cutting the sugar in the pastry) then try some cinnamon or cloves with it.
  8. you can do but wont taste as nice
  9. you can but it will have a bitter taste
  10. If the apples are sweet you may get away with it. But you wont get the nice syrupy juice that coats the apples.
  11. This is my mother's apple pie. This is the recipe I use all the time and I love it. I also use a dash of nutmeg so if you wish you can put that in too 6 cups thinly sliced apples 3/4 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon butter 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie DIRECTIONS Prepare your pastry for a two crust pie. Wipe, quarter, core, peel, and slice apples; measure to 6 cups. Combine sugar and cinnamon. The amount of sugar used depends on how tart your apples are. Arrange apples in layers in pastry lined pie plate. Sprinkle each layer with sugar and cinnamon. Dot top layer with small pieces of butter or margarine. Cover with top crust. Place on lowest rack in oven preheated to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake for 30 to 35 minutes longer. Serve warm or cold.
