What is the difference between Shepherds Pie and Cottage Pie?
Public Comments
- One of them is a sheep.
- shepherds pie is made with lamb cottage pie is made with beef (and potato mash)
- I think Cottage Pie has a top and bottom crust, like a Chicken Pot Pie, but w/ beef or lamb or both. Shepherd's Pie is basically beef stew in a casserole dish, topped w/ mashed potatoes spread over the top and sealed on teh edges. No crust.
- Shepherds tended sheep...so shepherd's pie is made with lamb or mutton. Cottege pie is beef (I don't know why).
- one is beef, one is lamb
- They are both made with mashed potatoes on top. But I think she is right about one with lamb & one with beef. Lamb is very popular in Ireland.
- I make mine with beef but i still call it shepards pie. Never heard of cottage pie.
